Ancient Coinage of Troas, Abydos

According to legend, Leander used to swim across the straits to Sestos every night, to be with his lover, Hero. He drowned in a storm. The historically most important crossing was made by Xerxes who, in 480 BC, built a bridge of 674 rafts to invade Greece. There are practically no remains of the town left today.
