During Michael III's reign the Arabs subjugated Sicily and parts of Southern Italy. The ambitious peasant Basil of Macedonia, persuaded Michael to crown him co-emperor, murdered him a year later and perpetuated the "Michael The Drunkard" myth to justify his treachery.
