1280. PUPIENUS . 238 AD. Æ Sestertius (19.74 gm). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus and cornucopiae. RIC IV 14; BMCRE 10; Cohen 15. Good VF, attractive green patina. Very nice. ($1000) A fascinating coin overstruck on another Pupienus sestertius. The original coin was an example of RIC 15 with the reverse legend P M TR P COS II P P and the reverse type of Pupienus standing left holding a branch and parazonium. The remains of the original coin can be identified on the reverse by drawing an arc from 3:00 to 6:00. The end of the legend, I P P, the C, the parazonium, the drapery below the parazonium, the right leg and both feet all belong to the host coin. CNG Mail bid sale #58, 18 Sept 2001, lot 1280.
