Gemini III, January 9th, 2007 Lot # 358 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$1000 / Price Realized: US$1200 Nerva. (96-98 AD). Orichalcum dupondius (12.85 gm). Rome, 96 AD. IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS II P P, radiate head right / FORTVNA AVGVST S C, an I after AVGVST eradicated in the die, Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia. BMCRE 93. CBN 78. Cohen 62. RIC 61. Struck from reverse die of Domitian. Very refined, elegant portrait. About extremely fine. On assuming power in 96, Nerva continued only one of Domitian’s coin types, namely that with Fortuna. The legend on Nerva’s coinage was modified from Domitian’s FORTVNA AVGVSTI to FORTVNA AVGVST. The present dupondius is rather unusual in that it seems to have been struck from an actual reverse die of Domitian, changed to a die of Nerva by the eradication of the “I” at the end of AVGVSTI. © 2006 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
