Æ Follis (2.56 gm). Thessalonica mint. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate and cuirassed bust right / VIRT EXERC, Sol, raising right hand and holding globe in left, standing left in center of plan of Roman camp; TS•B•. RIC VII 71. VF, rare. Estimate $400. The true meaning of this reverse type has never been fully deciphered, the latest theory being that the X shaped pattern represents Constantine's vision before the battle of the Milvian bridge. This does not seem likely since the type is known on coins of Licinius, a pagan, and perhaps more importantly, Constantine's enemy. Re-used by permission of CNG, www.historicalcoins.com.
