Constantine posthumous AE follis. Antioch, AD 337-340. 16 mm, 1.55 g. DV CONSTANTI-NVS PT AVGG, Veiled head right. No legend, Constantine driving quadriga right, hand of God reaching down from above, star in upper field. Mintmark: SMANS. RIC VIII, Antioch 37; LRBC I,1372. With permission of Leu Numismatik AG auction 7, lot 1739, Oct. 2020. It is ironic that Constantine, who tradition tells us was the first Christian emperor (although he only actually became one on his death bed), should have been honoured with Pagan deification and commemorated posthumously with traditional pagan symbolism as found on this coin. He was the last emperor to be so honoured.
