Antoninus Pius, AE33 of Tralles, Lydia. AD 138-161. Magistrate Poplios. TITOC AILIOC KAIC ANTWNEINOC, laureate head right. EPI POPLIOY GRAM TRALIANWN, Kore, veiled, standing right, holding long torch with a leafy handle, facing Demeter, veiled, standing left, holding corn-ears, poppy and torch, altar between them. BMC 143 corr; Mionnet IV, 1075; SNG Munich 747; Leypold I, 1321- 1322; SNG Fitzwilliam 4907; Waddington 5431; Paris 1668. The object which Kore is holding is sometimes described as a sceptre, but as this example from the Prowe sale shows, it is more likely a torch with the handle made from a tree branch. In addition, some poorer examples are described as having a prow between the figures, instead of "altar".
