Pactolos? Lydia, AE22. Imperial times. 7.54 g. Head of Artemis right, quiver over her left shoulder. PAKTWLEWN MENE to right and left of Athena standing left, holding Nike and spear, resting hand on shield. Prowe III 1515; Rhousopoulos 4058. Image taken from the Prowe catalog. It has long been disputed whether this town, named after the gold-rich river in Lydia, existed or not. Sestini and then Mionnet (Supp VII) listed one such coin, Imhoof listed another in RSN 1896 (Augustus/Livia), and Waddington 5120 described another. Imhoof later wrote that his Augustus coin was from Nysa, probably with an altered legend, and, in GRM, RSN 1908 he wrote that the legends on the Sestini/Mionnet coins were misreadings of CARDIANWN (Sardes) (as CARDIANWN PAKTWLEWN = SNG Lewis 1000) and that the city of Paktolos did not exist at all. In RSN 1908 he also mentions this coin from the Prowe/Rhousopoulos collections, stating that the legend is actually "PAKTWLEWN CARDIANWN" However, the legend PAKTWLEWN MENE on this very Prowe/Rhousopoulos coin shown here is very clear and no part of it can be mistaken for the name of Sardes.
