This page covers Pegasi Numbers 364 to 500
Period 5
345 to 307 B.C.

End of Period 5
Period 6

Fourth and Third Centuries to Circa B.C. 243.

This information covers a large class of staters with Chief Magistrate's initials or monograms (optional) plus a symbol (optional) in the field of the reverse. This series has the letter Q (koppa) on the obverse below Pegasus as shown.

Koppa is a letter that was used in early forms of the Greek alphabet from Phoenician qoph.
It was originally used to denote the /k/ sound (for Korinth), but fell out of use as an alphabetic character in favour of Kappa (K).
Thus :-

óρινθος

Became

Kóρινθος

The Obverse of these Staters has an image of Pegasus and the Reverse an image of Athena wearing a Corinthian Helmet (sometimes laureate but mostly not) over a leather cap (but not always!). The image of Athena is usually accompanied by a "Symbol" and initials of the issuing chief magistrate or a monogram depicting the same.

I have attempted to list a large majority of these highly interesting coins but this list is not complete. The 3 Corinth pages alone exceed 200 varieties.

The 2 images = LEFT and = RIGHT above a coin indicates the direction of Pegasus' flight.
Unlike Series 4, the image of Pegasus on the obverse of Series 5 and 6 is consistent.
The only variation is whether it faces left or right.

Flaming Altar - Φ Ι
Ravel does not list this coin. Calciati mentions that the two coins he saw (sold at auctions in 1980 and 1990) did not have a clear Φ and it was not well aligned with the I. An altar appears in an issue of Anaktorium. Cammann's catalog of symbols (in ANS NMM 53) also only lists the altar for Anaktorium.
