Andronicus I, Constantinople, Billon aspron trachy, 30mm. MHP-QV to left and right of Mary, nimbate, standing facing on dais, holding before her the nimbate head of infant Christ facing left. ANDRONIKOC (DECPOTHC), IC XC at upper right, full-length figure of emperor on left, wearing loros with 3 jewels on the loros between the waist and collar-piece, holding labarum-headed sceptre and cross on globe, crowned by Christ bearded and nimbate, holding book of gospels in left hand. Reverse is double-struck resulting in two Christs. Sear 1985; Dumbarton Oaks Collection 3b. On this coin, Mary is 20mm high; compared to the normal 18mm. The obverse image looks even larger due to double striking, making the entire length slightly greater than 21mm. There appear to be 2 different sizes of Mary on the obverse of the 3b type; 18mm and 20mm. Contributed by Russell Stanley, Feb 2012.
