Description Classical Cash and OldRomanCoins.com present: [Look at THIS!] [Look at THIS!] Nice Cleopatra portrait, Egypt 80 dr. VF Ptolemaic Egypt, Cleopatra VII, AE obol (or 80 drachma), (17.13g) Diademed bust right / Eagle standing left, on thunderbolt, double cornucopia to left, ½ to right. S7955, Svoronos 1871. VF, brown-green patina, deep casting pit on reverse right field. Ptolemaic Egypt issued coins of copper, silver and gold, each with their full intrinsic value of metal. This obol of 4 attic drachm weight (= 5 Ptolemaic drachms), was worth 1/24th of an attic silver tetradrachm, 1/20th of a Ptolemaic silver tetradrachm and 1/200th of a gold Ptolemaic tetradrachm. A Greek named Hieron, living in 1st century BC Alexandria, noted temples used vending machines which dispensed holy water. His sketches have survived. Vending machines would have used round, small denominations, of consistent weight. This coin is probably the best candidate for the coin the vending machines would have accepted. (cf. Ancient Inventions for more information about ancient vending machines.) PLEASE CLICK HERE to see ALL the wonderful items in this week's sale!
