Description Classical Cash and Old Roman Coins for Special Collectors OldRomanCoins.com present -- our 110th weekly eBay Sale! [Image] [Image] ORC1059 Egypt, gold octodrachm, gVF Egypt, Ptolemy VI or VIII, gold octodrachm, (27.62g) c. 150 BC, Kition (?) Mint, Cyprus, Veiled bust of Arsinoe II right, K behind. / APSINOHS ØILADELØOY Double cornucopia, bound with fillets, tendrils at base. SNG Cop. 322; Svor 1499 (Egypt); S 7888A (Kition). Good VF, some light scratches and marks visible in the photo, rim marks, perhaps indicating use in jewelry, or more likely, time in a bag tossed around with other heavy gold coins in the hoard of the government or a wealthy banker. The portrait of Arsinoe II shows some of the strong chin which is the most distinctive feature of her father Ptolemy I. Massive gold octodrachms in the name of Arsione were first struck under her brother-husband Ptolemy II, at an uncertain mint. Phoenician Sidon, Tyre, Joppa, and Ptolemais issued similar coins under Ptolemy III. Cyprus mints at Kition, Paphos and Salamis struck gold octodrachms in the name of Arsinoe II under Ptolemy V. The Kition octodrachms have the date and KI mintmark, (BMC p. 44, #34), or simply K and thunderbolt (BMC p.43 #8) on the reverse. An issue of nearly identical style had a K on the obverse (BMC p. 43 #10), a symbol first used on Kition tetradrachms of Alexander (Price 3106a). This later issue, with K on the obverse, was continued on a larger scale under Ptolemy VI and VIII (BMC p.45, #36-40). However, K is conceivably a denominational mark, for twenty silver tetradrachms. The ancient ratio of gold to silver was 10 to 1, making this large gold coin equal to 276 grams of silver, 20 13.8 gram tetradrachms. Tetradrachms of the time weighed slightly more, and contained a modest amount of base metal. The obverse K may well be a pun on the denomination and the mintmark. A small group of gold tetradrachms (BMC p. 45, #40.) with obverse K supports the mintmark, as I would be expected for the 10 tetradrachm coin. The apparent stylistic link between these coins and the known tetradrachms of Kition, (BMC plate XX, #1-2) strengthens this mint attribution. Silver tetradrachms were the principal denomination of large-scale trade, while gold was an instrument of bankers. Richard Hazzard notes that a laborer's wage in 250 BC was an obol. The tetradrachm would have been 24 days wage for laborer, who worked for an obol a day. Accepted by merchants throughout the Ptolemaic holdings, a tetradrachm may be thought of as an equivalent of an ancient $1000 bill. If the silver tetradrachm was an ancient $1000 bill, then this coin was a $20,000 bill. Such a large denomination, the largest denomination ancient coin (with a few very unusual exceptions), was usable only in very large scale transactions. before you bid, if you have a question about this item. to see ALL the items in this sale and how to pay if you win ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
