    Ptolemaic Egypt, Ptolemy II or III, c. 250 BC, AR tetradrachm,
    (13.86g) Sidon Mint, Phoenicia, Diademed head of Ptolemy II(?) as
    Zeus right, with aegis at neck. / PTOLEMAIOY SWTHPOS Eagle standing
[ ] left, on thunderbolt, monogram and M before, date at right. S7810   [ ]
    (Ptol3) var. VF, area of dark encrustation on reverse.

    Ex-Shipwreck c. 240 BC, found on the coast of Lebanon. From a group
    of tetradrachms of Ptolemy I, II and III, mostly from Sidon and
    Tyre mints. The latest dated issue in the group is from Year 1 of
    Ptolemy III, which was 246/5 BC. Full weight of a tetradrachm of
    this time should be 14.2g. References call the obverse portrait
    Ptolemy I. However, the portrait may be of the contemporary ruler,
    either Ptolemy II or III. A comparison of this portrait can be made
    with the Ptolemy II portrait on the famous four portrait gold
    tetradrachms and octadrachms of this period.
