    Egypt, Ptolemy I, gold hemidrachm (1.75g) equal to five silver
    drachms, attributed to Alexandria by Svoronos, to Paphos by the
    consignor, signed by Delta, 12:00 die axis, Diademed head of
    Ptolemy I facing right, as Zeus, wearing aegis at base of neck,
    small delta behind ear. / [PTOLEMAIOY] BASILEWS Eagle standing
    left, wings open, on thunderbolt, A or L before. BMC 80-81; Svor.

    Hazard writes, "No subsequent craftsman at the Alexandrine mint
[ ] ever showed the same mastery of design and detail as Delta, and, in [ ]
    the opinion of this writer, he was the greatest engraver of the
    Hellenistic Age. So proud was he of his productions that he signed
    his initial D . . . in the small space behind King Ptolemy's ear.
    Pyrrhus of Epirus and Seleucus of Syria, both residents of
    Ptolemy's court, later used Delta's designs for their own coinages;
    other Greek craftsmen also admired Delta and copied his designs at
    Ecbatana, Syracuse, Antioch, and other mints over the next five
    hundred years." Hazard, Ptolemaic Coins, p. 26-27.

    From the time of Philip II of Macedon, until Byzantine times, gold
    was usually valued at ten times silver. This 1.75 g gold half
    drachm was worth 17.5 g of silver, five silver drachms. While
    Svoronos attributes the precious metal coinage of Ptolemy I to
    Alexandria, Paphos should be considered. In particular, the loss of
    Paphos to the Macedonians, and its subsequent recovery fits well
    with the emergence of a new type of tetradrachm on a new weight
    standard.
