Silver Tetradrachm, Merv mint Obverse: Draped bust of Eukratides right wearing ornamented crested helmet; filet border. Reverse: Greek legends; the Dioscuroi on horseback, prancing right, each holding spear and palm; Merv mint monogram below. Condition: Near EF; Coin is much better than the picture. It has very nice smooth medium silver metal. This coin has excellent metal for the issue and no porosity, just some honest wear and not much of that. Excellent centering and strike with high relief on both sides. There is insignificant encrustation in some of the obverse recesses. The reverse is excellent and a there is a large picture of it below so you can better appreciate the detail. It has great high relief lettering and detail; the faces of the Dioscuroi, horses manes, spears and palms are all in full detail. Overall, the coin is quite attractive. Valuation: Why Valuation? Comparing this coin to the other similar types in 36 CNG catalogs, I was surprised to find only one coin with this mint symbol. In CNG XVIII, lot 242, there is a Near EF example of the Merv mint with the same mint symbol. It was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $650 + 10%. It has more wear on both sides than the coin at auction. I would grade the coin at auction as being much better than lot 242. In CNG 53, lot 863, a toned Good VF was estimated at $600 which sold for $550 + 10 %. Lot 863 seems to have much more wear on the reverse and the surfaces do not seem as smooth as the coin at auction. CNG 39, lots 859 and 860 are an EF estimated at $1000 which sold for $900 + 10% and a Good VF estimated at $400 which sold for $550 + 10%. The reverse of the coin at auction is much better than lot 860 and better than lot 859. The obverse of the coin at auction is slightly better than lot 860 and about the same as lot 859. In Harlan J. Berk auction number 99, 11/25/97, lots 186 and 187, graded VF+ and about EF, were both estimated at $550. The coin at auction is much better than either of those, having less wear and better style and detail than either of the coins listed in the Berk auction. [Image] All in all, the coin at auction has the best reverse of any of the examples. It has good non-porous surfaces which are hard to find in this issue. Many EF graded coins having porosity are valued at less than a good VF without porosity. This is a very nice example of a scarce Greek classic. Size: 16.73 grams, die axis=1, flan 4.2 mm thick, 32.5 mm in diameter. References: Sear 7570 variety, MIG 177b, Mitchiner ACW 171i variety.
