Description [Image] [Image] ANCIENT COINS [Image] Seleukid. Demetrios II. AR Tet. 1st Reign. An AR tetradrachm of Demetrios II, Nikator (1st Reign - 145-138 BC), struck at Antioch during 146/145 BC. References: Sear 7050 var.; cf. Newell, SMA 196-200. Condition: aEF, high relief portrait on a large flan, flan lamination below neck, attractively toned. Obv. Young, diademed head of Demetrios II right, fillet border. Rev. Naked Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and resting on bow; on right, BASILEWS DHMHTRIOU; on left, QEOU FILADELFOU NIKATOROS; below Apollo's hand, monogram of M and T; in exergue, ZXP and monogram. Demetrios overthrew Alexander Balas with the help of Ptolemy of Egypt. In 140 BC, he invaded Parthia, but was captured and remained in the hands of the Parthians for a decade.
