                                Description

     One of the major figures of the Seleukid dynasty, ruling from
     223-187BC, his numerous military campaigns met with mixed
     results. Ultimately unsuccessful against Rome and her allies in
     Asia Minor, he was murdered in 187BC.

     Obverse: Diademed head of Antiochus III the Great with features
     suggesting early middle-age.
     Reverse: Naked Apollo seated l., on omphalos, holding arrow and
     resting on bow. On r., BASILEOS; on l., ANTIOCHUS; monograms in
     fields to l. and r.
     Reference: Sear 6936v., Wt. 17.1 gm.
