This is a high relief coin measuring 5.2mm thick on a 31.5 mm diameter flan. Compare this coin to similar types Triton I, lot 461, and Triton I, lot 462, where two EF's estimated at $750 sold for $990 + 99 = $1089 and $980 + 98 = $1078; in Triton III, lot 419, an EF was estimated at $1,000 and sold for $900 + 90 = $990; in Triton II, lot 356, a superb EF was estimated at $2,000 and sold for $2,100 + 305 = $2,405; in Triton II, lot 359, a choice EF was estimated at $2,500 and sold for $4,250 + 637.50 = $4,887.50; this coin is significantly better than the EF's in Triton I and Triton III. The reverse of the coin at auction is better than both the superb EF and choice EF of Triton II. This coin seems to have better surfaces than any of the Triton coins. The artistic style of the obverse is exceptional, the forehead and brow being a refined version of Triton II, lot 359. What distinguishes this coin is the extremely artistic rendition on the reverse. Athena's helmet & plume, her face, the gown, the lion's head, and Nike are all of a style much superior and more finely engraved than any of the Triton examples. Some of the Triton examples are out of proportion, poorly engraved and awkward. The fine style of Alexander is second only to the Triton II, lot 359, but perhaps more realistic.
