  Description

     Greek - Demetrios Poliorketes (294-288 BC) - AR Tetradrachm -
     Salamis Mint (Cyprus) - This style of Tetradrachm with Poseidon
     on the reverse appears to have alluded to Demetrioses great naval
     victory in the battle of Salamis off the coast of Cyprus over
     Ptolemy of Eygpt. Similar to Sear 6762 (Newell, The Coinages of
     Demetrius Poliocetes, Type 22) except the HP is between
     Poseidon's legs (Newell, The Coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes,
     Type 23; obverse dies 59 - 61 inclusive; and is rarer than Sear
     6762. Obverse: Winged Nike to left on prow of defeated Galley
     with Stylis (Signal mast wrenched from the defeated admiral's
     flagship) in left hand and in her right hand a Salpinx but more
     specifically a war trumpet with which to proclaim the great
     victory over Ptolemy. Reverse: Fighting Poseidon viewed from
     behind (demonstrating the highly crafted reverse dies 59 - 61,
     note the shapely buttocks) with trident and holding a chlamys on
     outstreched left arm. To the right in Greek the King's name,
     beneath the Greek word for King. Monogram resembling double-axe
     to the left and HP between legs. Condition: See Scan; Finest
     style for issue and rare type. Buyer pays $5.00 for insured
     shipping.
