Description Classical Cash and Old Roman Coins for Special Collectors OldRomanCoins.com present -- our 106th weekly eBay Sale! [Image] [Image] ORC0611 Carthage 9g, gold, horse, aEF Carthage, gold stater (of 2.5 drachms?), (9.04g) c. 350 BC, Carthage Mint, Bust of Tanit left, wreathed with corn, wearing triple-drop earring and necklace of 8 pendants. / Horse standing right, group of three pellets before. S 6446; Jenkins & Lewis, Group IIIb, 14 (later die state of same obverse die, perhaps the same reverse die). Near EF, die breaks in obverse field, reverse double struck. Jenkins & Lewis note that this coin may have been valued at 25 Attic drachms of silver, at the reduced gold to silver ratio of 11.25 : 1. Because this large gold coin was struck prior to the double darics of Darius III and the distaters of Alexander the Great, it was the largest gold coin to this date, (excepting the heavy gold staters of Croisos), heavier than the 8.6 gram staters and darics, of Lampsacus and Persia, which would have competed against it in trade. Massive gold issues of Philip II would soon move the gold to silver ratio to 10 : 1. Is it possible that Group IIIb, with it's slightly lower gold weight, falls after Group IIIj, instead of where J & L place it? In any event, Jenkins & Lewis note, "The bulk of extant pieces are certainly from Sardinia. . . ." though the type has been found in North Africa, Sicily and the Azores. They go on to identify Carthage as the most likely mint, with West Africa as the likely source of the gold, quoting Heroditos (iv. 196) for the methods of silent barter: "The Carthaginians also tell us about a part of Libya and its inhabitants beyond the Strait of Gibraltar. When they reach this country, they unload their goods and arrange them on the beach; they then return to their ships and send up a smoke signal. When the natives see the smoke, they come down to the sea and place on the shore a quantity of gold in exchange for the goods and then retire. The Carthaginians then come ashore again and examine the gold that has been left; if they think it represents the value of the goods, they collect it and sail away, if not they go back to the ships and wait until the natives have added sufficient gold to satisfy them. Neither side tricks the other; the Carthaginians never touch the gold until it equals in value what they have brought for sale, and the natives never touch the goods until the gold has been taken away." The gold this coin is struck from likely came from the West African coast. to see ALL the wonderful items in this week's eBay sale and our terms of sale [Image] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
