                    ORC2609 Sicilo-Punic tetr. Horse EF

Sicilo-Punic, AR tetradrachm, (16.82g) c. 390-350 BC, Head of Persephone
left, surrounded by four swimming dolphins. / Horse running left, past palm
tree. S 6432. Toned EF, centered on an exceptional flan.

Sear notes: "The obverse type is a very close copy of the Syracusan
original." The Carthaginians were soon engaged against the Syracusians
under the Tyrant Agothokles. His tetradrachms have a similar obverse, also
taken from the dekadrachms of c. 400 BC. The proportions of the horse are
very slightly altered to create a view from the ground.
