                ORC2163 Kyrene, Archaic Silphium tetr, F-VF

Kyrene, North Africa, AR tetradrachm, (17.22g) c. 480 BC, Silphium plant,
fruit at each side, traces of undertype. / Silphium fruit, dolphin upward
at each side, all within incuse square, apparent owl tail from undertype in
periphery. S6239; Rosen 769. Toned F-VF, flatly struck on reverse right,
overstruck on an archaic owl tetradrachm of Athens. Ex-another dealer, with
his $3000 ticket.

The possible undertype is of interest, though far from clear. Athenian owl
tetradrachms are often found in Egypt and North Africa, perhaps as payment
for grain, or even silphium fruit. Thought to be extinct since the first
century AD, recent reports place plants which may be Silphium, in Libya.
