Kingdom of Persia, AR tetradrachm (?) (13.03g) Ephesos Mint (?), c. 336-334 BC, Persian archer in kneeling-running attitude right, holding spear and bow. / Granulated incuse containing irregular markings, perhaps a relief map of hinterlands of Ephesus. A.E.M. Johnson "The Earliest Preserved Greek Map: A New Ionian Coin Type" JHS (1967) Weber6238, S6162, Mitchiner, Type17A, BMC14 (Ionia 324, 3-6) F / F-VF, fields porous. Probably struck while in retreat from Alexander the Great. Rare. Johnson writes that the reverse is a relief map of the hinterlands of Ephesos. On the right (North) are the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Cayster and Maender, to the left on which are three mountain ridges (Masdranbada Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). If this is true, then this coin is the first Greek map and the first physical relief map known. The coins were probably struck under the Perisian general Memnon at Ephesos. Very rare.
