                          ORC7537 Cyprus gold EF

Kition, Cyprus, gold half stater (10 silver drachms) of Euboic-Attic
standard, (4.17g) Pamiathon, 361-312 BC, Year 30 = c. 332 BC, Naked
Hercules, wearing lion skin, advancing right, brandishing club and holding
bow, ankh symbol before. / King's name in Aramaic letters. Stag kneeling
right, attacked by lion right on its back, Phoenician letter for 30 before.
S 5738; BMC 80. EF, and well-centered, without the die rust and centering
problems which are typical for these, a flaw on the obverse right pec,
another at 2:00, a trivial ding on obverse at 8:00, and just a little dirt
adhering to the reverse fields.

This denomination was issued from c. 337 to c. 322 BC, and dated to the
year of the reign of the king of Kition. It is noteworthy that during this
period, Kition also struck gold staters for Alexander the Great, on the
Macedonian Attic weight standard of c. 8.57 g / stater. Despite the modest
weight difference, it is likely this coin was valued at exactly half of the
Attic weight stater.
