Silver Stater Obverse: Amazon kneeling left examining bow held with both hands, quiver and bow case at her left hip; satyr's facing head in right field; all within dotted circular border. Reverse: Grape cluster on stalk with tendrils all within dotted square inside incuse square; fly lower right; Greek legend left, (sigma)O(lambda)E(omega)N, (gamma) above grape cluster. Condition: As Struck, Coin is much, much better than picture. This coin personifies what an ancient coin should be: great subject matter, rugged crude execution. The surfaces are lustrous, minty lightly toned excellent silver. The fields are pristine inside of the dotted borders with mint sheen and a subtle iridescence. The picture does not show the excellent surfaces. The obverse of this issue generally has a worn obverse die, and this coin is much better than normal. The quiver and the arrows are fully struck up as shown in the enlargement of the obverse. The grapes and fly are shown in the enlargement below. The reverse strike is just a bit weak on the grapes but has an excellent fly. Centering on obverse is off, but not losing any design. Reverse loses part of fly and legend, but keeps it's character. Flan is a great rugged hunk of excellent silver. Valuation: Why Valuation? In Triton IV, lot 290, a lightly toned EF with the typical worn obverse die was estimated at $2,000.00. Lot 290 is the variety known as Levante 40, which does not have the Gamma above the grape cluster. It seems to be an excellent coin without the ruggedness of the coin at auction. Comparing the coin at auction to lot 290, I find superb pristine surfaces on the coin at auction. The coin at auction is not as well centered, but has excellent metal and a wonderful ancient character. In Sear Greek Coins, Volume 2, 5601, a different variety (Levante 40), is estimated at 500 pounds or $750 for an average VF. Size: 10.67 grams, die axis=4.5, flan 4.3 mm thick, 23.0 mm in diameter.
