                                ANCIENT COINS
                                     [Image]

                 Alexander the Great. AR Tetradrachm. Alabanda.

     An AR tetradrachm (broad flan - 33 mm) of Alexander the Great
     (336-323 BC), struck posthumously at Alabanda, Caria during 173-167
     BC.

     References: Sear 4765 var.

     Condition: VF/aVF.

     Obv. Head of young Herakles right, clad in lion's skin. Counterstamp:
     Head of Tyche right.

     Rev. Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter, ALEXANDROU
     behind; before, Pegasos left; below throne, monogram.

     Alabanda and numerous other cities in Asia Minor restored the types
     of Alexander the Great on tetradrachms minted in the 2nd century BC.
     Alabanda was a prosperous city, and according to Sear, had "a
     population reputed to be one of the most dissolute in the whole of
     Asia Minor."
