Myrina was a place of considerable importance in Hellenistic times. It was situated north-east of Kyme. This very large and chunky tetradrachm depicts a laureled head of Apollo of Grynion on the obverse. On the reverse, Apollo is depicted holding a phiale and laurel branch with fillets. At Apollo's feet is the omphalos of the earth and an amphora. Diameter: 1 3/8 inches. Weight: 16.7 gm. A top class beauty. This is a very rare type of Greek silver tetradrachm, and in this superb condition represents an exquisite three dimensional sculpture the likes of which we have only seen once before in the last ten years.
