Silver Tetradrachm, 33.8 mm wide, 4.8 mm thick Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo of Grynion right, three loose braids. Reverse: MYPINAI(omega)N behind Apollo of Grynion standing right, holding phiale and laurel branch with fillets; omphalos and amphora at feet, monogram behind; all within laurel wreath. Condition: Choice EF, Coin is much better than picture. This coin has nice smooth, light silver surfaces. The coin has a high relief having a thickness of 4.8 mm. The hair detail is exceptional for the issue, having only the slightest loss of detail on the high points. The reverse strike is exceptional for the issue with full wreath detail and fully struck devices. The phiale, laurel branch with fillets, omphalos, amphora, and Apollo are all well struck with full detail. The centering is excellent on both sides. There are some insignificant reverse die breaks which do not detract. This issue is one of the masterpieces of Greek coinage. The wreath on the reverse is strongly struck around the entire coin. Most examples of this coin do not have a completely struck wreath. This coin has exceptional strikes and detail on both sides, with excellent centering, making this an impressive example of this beautiful coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? A choice EF appears in CNG 35, lot 275; it was estimated at $650 and sold for $500 + 10%. Lot 275 has significantly more softness in strike on the first row of hair above the forehead and the tail of the laurel wreath. It does not have as artistic reverse as the coin at auction. Lot 275's reverse is crowded. In CNG 35, lot 278, another choice EF was estimated at $750 and sold for $900 + 10%. Lot 278 has significantly more softness in strike on the first row of hair above the forehead. The whole side of Apollo on the reverse seems to have some flatness in strike. In CNG 35, lot 279, another choice EF was estimated at $750 and sold for $750 + 10%. Lot 279 has significantly more softness in strike on the first row of hair above the forehead and the tail of the laurel wreath, and lot 279 is off center. The reverse has significant softness in strike of the laurel wreath and it is not as artistic as the coin at auction. Comparing the coin at auction to these coins, we find that the coin at auction is nicer than the examples. The hair detail on the first row of hair above the forehead is the best of any of the coins, the examples are not close. The reverse of the coin at auction is of finer style with better drapery of the robe. The reverse of the coin at auction has one of the best strikes of any of this coin I have seen. It is a stunning example of Greek artistry. Size: 16.58 grams, die axis 1.0, flan 4.8 mm thick, 33.8 mm in diameter. References: Sacks, ANSMN 30, issue 18; Sear 4216.
