Aetolian League, Late 3rd Century BC. Contributed by Mark T. Ware. Following eMail was posted to the Numism-L discussion list about it... Subject: Re: FW: Help identifying a Greek Coin Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 06:34:58 +0200 From: DEMETRIADI BASIL To: NUMISM-L@VM.SC.EDU Mark, A very similar coin sold in New York on Dec. 7 (The New York Sale III, lot 132) for $ 2200 + 15%. The one in your scan looks sharper but there is some roughness on the obverse field around 3 o'clock. This is the commonest issue of an extensive series struck by the Aetolian League in the late 3rd century B. C. In the same auction the next lot, # 133, a very rare variety of the same series, remained unsold at $ 800. In addition to the Scheu reference cited in the auction catalogue there is a later publication by Roger A. de Laix in a Journal called California Studies in Classical Antiquity which is very helpful as it lists all known (to him) varieties of the entire silver and gold coinage. If you are not aware of the above auction catalogue and /or wish to have the exact references for the coin you show in your scan, you can contact me off list.
