Nice metal, pleasing portrait. $975. This sharp silver piece displays an excellent portrait of this short-sighted and short-reigning king. The grandson of Hieron II, Hieronymous wasted little time after gaining the throne to reverse the policy of his grandfather and ally Syracuse with Carthage against Rome. While seemingly a logical move at the time (Hannibal had just inflicted three crushing defeats on the Romans, and seemed to be on the verge of total victory), it brought nothing but misery to his prosperous city. Hieronymus was murdered, possibly at the behest of Rome, early in 214 BC, but the cabal that seized power also pursued a pro-Carthage policy that led to the Romans laying siege to Syracuse and sacking it in 212 BC.
