                    ORC9401 DEMARETION MASTER TETR. VF

Leontini, Sicily, AR tetradrachm, (16.10g) c. 470-465 BC, Slow quadriga
driven right by charioteer who is crowned by Nike flying left above, lion
running right in exergue. / L EO N TIN O Laureate head of Apollo right, of
superb late archaic style, three bay leaves around, lion running right
below. S823 (15,000 pounds); BMC14(same dies); SNG ANS 217(same dies);
Gulbenkian 211 (same dies) Randazo 89 (same dies); Dewing 623 (same dies).
Deeply toned VF, die break beginning to appear at ear and neck truncation,
minor surface flaws, impressive style.

Sear notes, "This masterpiece of late archaic art is probably by the same
hand as the famous 'Demareteion' coinage of Syracuse."

It has been suggested that the first lion on this coin, and the lion on the
obverse of the Demareteion dekadrachm and tetradrachm are a mark of the
master-engraver, who may have been a native of Lentinini.
