Silver Nomos, Scarce Obverse: Head of Athena left, wearing laureate Attic helmet. Reverse: Greek legends; Lion pulling down stag to right. Condition: EF; Coin is much better than the picture. It has excellent smooth light silver metal with luster in the protected areas. Superb centering and strike for the issue. The reverse is one of the best centered for these issues that you will see. It also has one of of the best strikes on the lion that you will see. The obverse is not as weak at the high point as most others in this issue. Overall, the coin is probably one of the best of this scarce issue that exists. Valuation: Why Valuation? Comparing this coin to the other similar types in fifty-one CNG and Triton catalogs, I did not find a single example of this coin. The two lots I found, both have Athena right and the lion left, opposite of the coin at auction. This is NOT the much more common Athena with a helmet decorated with a griffin type. In CNG 40, lot 660, there is a toned, good VF, with a die crack on the reverse. It was estimated at $800 and sold for $700 + 10% for a total of $770. Note the weakness at the ear of the obverse of lot 660. The reverse of lot 660 has most of the lion's butt off the flan and the nose and tail of the stag off the flan. In CNG 50, lot 446, a VF was estimated at $250 and sold for $325 + 10 % for a total of $357.50. Lot 446 has much more wear and the nose and chin of Athena are off the flan, both of which significantly decrease its value. Sear 453 places an estimate of 400 pounds or $640 for a VF condition coin. All in all, the coin at auction has the best reverse of the pictured examples. This is an excellent example of this scarce Greek coin. Size: 7.56 grams, die axis=11, flan 4.0 mm thick, 21.0 mm in diameter. References: Sear 453 variety, Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum American Numismatic Society 1256.
