Double Nomos, Rare Denomination, 15.71 gm, 25 mm. Obverse: Bearded head of Leukippos right, wearing Corinthian helmet ornamented with Nike in a galloping quadriga; behind, forepart of a lion right and Alpha, Pi, Eta behind. Reverse: Barley ear with seven grains; leaf with club, AMI below to left; METAPONTINON on right. Condition: VF/good VF, Coin is slightly better than picture. This coin has very good smooth metal. Luster in protected areas of the face and the barley. Nike and quadriga on helmet show up better than in picture. Beard flatness may be due more to a soft strike than wear since the metal is in such good condition. Virtually all of legend legible on reverse. Back of lion and tip of chin off flan, but beautiful strong portrait. Valuation: Why Valuation? First, this is a Double Nomos, a large coin and considered rare for this issue, weighing 15.71 grams. Sear in Greek Coins and Their Values, calls it a Distater or Tetradrachm. It is not the the more common smaller Nomos which weighs only about 7.8 grams. A double nomos was found in CNG 54, lot 174, listed as a good VF with soft strike and corrosion and was estimated at $750. Another was found in CNG 46, lot 56, listed as a nice VF with minor reverse roughness and was estimated at $1,500. Two VF ones were found in CNG 40, lot 628, estimated at $800, and in CNG 39, lot 167, estimated at $750.00. The coin at auction seems to be much better than lots 174 and 167, which were both estimated at $750. It seems to compare favorably with lots 56 and 628 estimated at $1,500 and $800; having perhaps not as good an obverse and a better reverse. It is clear from the examples, that the beard flatness is probably from lack of metal and not wear. The coin at auction has the better reverse than any of the CNG examples. All in all, this is a very decent example of a scarce coin. Sear in Greek coins and their Values states a value of 1,000 pounds ($1,600) in VF. Size: 15.71 grams, die axis=11, flan 5.0 mm thick, 25 mm in diameter. References: B.M.C.1.75; Sear 414. All coins have a 14 day return privilege, no questions asked.
