The son of Valentinian I and Severa, Gratian was made Augustus in 367, at the age of only seven. After Valentinian's death, he became the sole ruler of the Western empire, though his four year old half brother Valentinian II was also raised to Augustus at this time, and was nominally associated in the government. Following the disaster that befell Valens at Hadrianopolis, the Eastern empire also fell into Gratian's hands, but he felt it expedient to elevate Theodosius to the Eastern throne to be his colleauge in the government. In 383, Magnus Maximus, the commander of the Roman armies in Britain, was declared Augustus by his troops and invaded Gaul. Gratian, deserted by his soldiers, fled toward the Alps, but was overtaken and murdered at Lugdunum on August 25, 383 AD. The obverse of this type depicts the diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gratian facing right, with legends D.N.GRATIANVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse type features Gratian standing left, holding Victory and raising a kneeling turreted female, with legends REPARATIO.REIPVB. The mintmark SIS is visible in the exergue. Coin shows some very lite granularity, but otherwise grades VF/F, with clear devices and most legends visible. A nice example of the type! All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
