Born of a British father and a Frankish mother, he rose to power by successful military service, commanding a troop of fellow barbarians under Constantine. His troops acclaimed him as Augustus, and after Constans, then the legitimate (but unpopular) Emperor, was killed, Magnentius became undisputed ruler of the Western Roman Empire. However, he challenged the forces of Constantius II, and suffered the first in a series of military defeats, which ultimately led to his suicide, leaving Constantius as sole Emperor.
