Description BRILLIANT CONSTANS AE4 [Image] Constans, 337-350AD; AE4 Obv: DN CONSTANS PF AVG, Diademed bust of Constans right Rev: VOT ++ MV.LT XXX, within laurel wreath, SMALDelta. in exergue Constans was one of the sons of Constantine I and was given the rank of Caesar in 333. He received Italy and Africa upon his father's death and his own elevation to Augustus. His two brothers and he squabbled over their respective territories and when Constantine II tried to take the territory of Constans he was killed by Constantius II and now the Empire could be divided by two, instead of three. He was the last Emperor to visit Britain but was not admired by the troops under his command. In 350 one of his officers, Magnentius (who was a former slave to Constantine I), led a revolt and was declared Emperor. Constans fled towards Spain but was soon captured and killed. RIC Alexandria 37 (Struck Spring 340 - 15 March 351), cf. Sear 3972 Interesting variant with ++ instead of XX on reverse. Small area of slight adhesions to obv and rev.
