RIC VII 147; LRBC 1034. VF, black patina with red earthen highlights. Estimate $300. Flavius Hannibalianus was the nephew of Constantine I and the brother of the Caesar Delmatius. He was made king of Armenia by Constantine in 335 AD, probably because Constantine realized the necessity of an diplomatically and militarily capable leader in the East to counter-balance the disunity and incompetence he felt his sons would represent once he was dead. He was successful in defending Armenia against the Persians who had invaded in 336, but, along with his brother Delmatius, he perished in the purges of pontential rivals that were instigated by the sons of Constantine after their father's death.
