     Carinus. 283-285 AD. Antoninianus (3.64 gm). Lugdunum mint. IMP C
     M AVR CARINVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right /
     SAECVLI FELICITAS, Carinus standing right, holding spear and
     globe; D. RIC V pt. 2, 214. EF, partial silvering. 714053.

     Carinus, the son of Carus, was left behind to rule Rome while his
     father and brother traveled east to wage war on the Persians.
     Carinus gained a reputation as a cruel, luxury-loving debauchee
     with a penchant for seducing other men's wives. When his father
     and brother died on campaign, the Eastern legions hailed
     Diocletian as Emperor instead of Carinus, who swiftly gathered
     the Western army and set out to meet the challenge. Along the
     way, he dealt successfully with another usurper, Julian of
     Pannonia. Carinus and his legions met Diocletian's forces at the
     River Margus near present-day Belgrade early in 285 AD. Carinus'
     legions seemed to be winning the battle when one of his own
     officers suddenly struck him down. It later turned out Carinus
     had seduced the man's wife; thus had the Emperor's affairs caught
     up with him.
