Description *** Be sure to check CNG's website for recent additions to our inventory *** [Image] Probus. 276-282 AD. Antoninianus (4.15 gm). Cyzicus mint. IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, radiate bust left, wearing imperial mantle and holding eagle-tipped sceptre / SO-LI INVICT-O, Sol, head left, in spread quadriga facing; CM/XXIT. RIC V pt. 2, 911. EF. 714052. The heroic Probus was well-regarded by later Roman historians, perhaps because of his careful attention to the old Republican traditions. Many of his coins depict him wearing the robes of a Roman consul, an office that had been largely ignored by his military predecessors. He was also apparently an inspiring military leader who took the fight against the barbarians to enemy territory for the first time in decades. He was a tough disciplinarian, though, and insisted that his soldiers take part in grunt work like road repair and clearing land for new vineyards, which led to a revolt by his troops and his own demise after six years of diligent, effective rule. Authenticity unconditionally guaranteed - 14 day return privilege for any reason. CNG accepts for payment: check, money order or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express). The manner of payment accepted is subject to our qualification of the bidder. CNG's Domestic, Canadian, and International postage rates. Pennsylvania residents please add appropriate sales tax.
