The denomination today known as "asses" of the late third century emperors (Claudius II, Aurelian, Tacitus, Florian, Probus, Carus, Numerian, Carinus, Diocletian and Maximian) [Image] circulated as sestertii, an eighth of the staple [Image] antoninianus, rather that the thirty-second value they would hold as asses. The thirty-second would have been too small to be useful for making change. The comparison is especially appropriate considering that the antoninianus stood at no clearly defined relationship with the varied weight gold of the period. "Dupondii" of these emperors should be considered double sestertii, inflationary descendants of the giant bronzes of Trajan Decius and the smaller bronzes of Postumus. Severina was the wife of Aurelian (Lucius Domitius Aurelianus), one of Rome's greatest generals, who was rewarded by his troops with the title of Augustus, by acclamation. He elevated Severina to Augusta in 274, the year before he was assassinated by officers who conspired against him. Little else is known of Severina herself.
