     Severina, wife of Aurelian. 270-275 AD. Æ Denarius (2.31 gm).
     Rome mint. Diademed and draped bust right / Venus standing left,
     holding Cupid(?) in right hand and sceptre in left hand; G. RIC V
     pt. 1, 6; Cohen 14. Good VF, light brown patina. Scarce. 716312.

     Production of the denarius under the military emperors had all
     but ceased by the time of Aurelian's coinage reform in 274. Under
     Aurelian, there was a temporary surge in production, both in
     Aurelian's name and that of his wife Severina, perhaps for the
     sake of convenience so that payments in odd numbers of coins
     could be made, and was finally replaced by the argenteus under
     Diocletian. Nevertheless, Aurelian and Severina's denarii are
     still scarce today.
