Description This piece was minted during the reign of Victorinus, who ruled the Gallo-Roman empire from 268-270 AD. He was a soldier of great ability who succeeded to the throne after the death of Marius, but little else is known about the history of this short reign, save for the secession of Spain and troubles in Gaul which culminated in a revolt at Augustodumum. Victorinus took the city after a siege of seven months, but would soon afterward be murdered by one of his own officers at Cologne. The obverse of this piece depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Victorinus facing right, with legends IMP.C.PIAV.VICTORINVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse features Sol advancing left, holding whip, with star in left field. The legend reads INVICTVS, and this type refers to the cult of the unconquered sun, which was in its ascendancy during the reign of Victorinus. Coin is struck a little off center on a somewhat irregular flan, but otherwise grades a nice VF+/AVF, with bold devices and legends where struck up, and a choice portrait of this short-lived emperor. A nice example of the type! Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more.
