Description Barry & Darling Ancient Coins http://www.bitsofhistory.com [Image] Scarce Aemilian AR Antoninianus Attribution: Sear 2856 Obverse : His radiate, draped bust right. 'IMP. CAES. AEMILIANVS P.F. AVG.' Reverse : Mars standing left leaning on shield and holding a spear. 'MARTI PROPVGT' Grade : gVF/VF Notes : Aemilian was one of the '90 day wonder' emperors. As governor of Moesia he successfully repelled a Gothic invasion and was then proclaimed augustus by his troops. With that inspiration he invaded Italy where the defending troops of Gallus and Volusian surrendered and murdered the ruling co-emperors. However, three months later he suffered a similiar fate when his own troops murdered him rather than fight with the army of Valerian. A scarce issue from a very short lived emperor. It features a nice portrait, good detail and full inscriptions. The only problem to note is a small, closed flan crack at 6:00. A very nice issue from a very scarce emperor. GOOD LUCK!
