Struck 251-253 A.D. at Rome. VF, scarce, Vagi/CHRE 2247, RIC 251a, (16.5 gm.). Gaius Vibius Afinius Gallus Vendumnianus Volusianus was the young son of Trebonianus Gallus, the Governor of Moesia. His father led his troops in support of Emperor Trajanus Decius. When Decius was suddenly defeated and killed by the Goths near the Danube, Gallus was hailed by the troops as their new Emperor in 251. He immediately elevated Decius' son Hostilian to Augustus, and gave his own son Volusian the rank of Caesar. Later that year, Hostilian died of plague, and Volusian became Augustus. Unfortunately for Volusian, his father came out on the short end of a peace treaty with the Goths, and Rome was overwhelmed by the spreading plague, and in the end, both were killed by their own soldiers, who preferred regicide to fighting the troops of the usurper Aemilian.
