IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / FELICITAS PVBLICA, S-C across field, Felicitas standing left leaning on column, holding caduceus and sceptre. RIC IV 251a; Cohen 35. VF, brown patina, overall grainy surfaces. Scarce! 716301. Volusian was the son of Trebonianus Gallus, who was proclaimed Emperor after the death of Trajan Decius at Abrittus in battle against the Goths. One historian blames the treachery of Gallus for the catastrophe, but no evidence supports this. Indeed, Gallus and his son seem to have been of a mild, civilian disposition, ill-suited to an age of rising military anarchy. After a brief 18-month reign studded with catastrophes, Gallus and Volusian met their end at the hands of their own soldiers, who viewed the usurper Aemilian as a more formidable character.
