Description Coin was minted between January 1 and March 6, 222 AD, during the final year of the reign of Elagabalus, who ruled from 218-222 AD. Elagabalus was a priest of the sun-god Elagabalus, and this is the source of the name that this emperor is best known by today. His reign was notable for its cruelty, bloodshed, religious fanaticism, and excesses of every description, and there was general satisfaction when he was murdered on March 6, 222. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus facing right, bearded, seen from front, with a horn above his forehead, signifying his divine power. The legends read IMP.ANTONINVS.PIVS.AVG. The reverse type features Elagabalus standing half-left, sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar and holding club, with a star at left. The legends read P.M.TR.P.V.COS.IIII.P.P. Coin grades a nice AVF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around. A nice example of this very scarce final year type of Elagabalus, catalouged as RSC-213c. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN.
