                       ROMAN ANTIOCH - MACRINUS AE 20 - VF

     Roman provincial bronze coin (20 mm in diameter) of the emperor
     Macrinus (AD 217-218). Very Fine, dark patina, 4.9 g. Sear, Roman
     Coins and Their Values 2067 (catalogue value 55 British pounds in
     VF); Sear, Greek Imperial Coins 2949; BMCGalatia 386.

     Obv. Laureate head of Macrinus right.

     Rev. SC, Delta above, Epsilon below, all within laurel wreath.

     Macrinus was the leader of the Praetorian Guard under Caracalla
     during Caracalla's military campaign in the East. When Caracalla was
     assassinated Macrinus was proclaimed emperor, and during his reign he
     remained in Syria and resided primarily in Antioch, which became a
     kind of Eastern capital of the Roman Empire during his rule.
