[Image] [Image] M. Aurelius Antoninus, know to us today as Caracalla, was elevated to the rank of Augustus (co-Emperor) at the age of ten in A.D. 198. He accompanied his father Septimius Severus and brother Geta on the expedition to Britain in A.D. 208. He led the campaign of 210 in person. The boyish face on this coin, however, belonged to a lad who would grow into a monster. Caracalla was, to be blunt, a nasty s.o.b. His reign is notable for his extravagance and cruelty. He ordered the assassination of his own brother, Geta, and then attempted to erase his very memory from history. Caracalla himself was later assasinated on the orders of the Praetorian Prefect Macrinus while travelling in the East. The nickname Caracalla comes from the term caracallus which refers to a hooded cloak worn by the Germans. The emperor became accustomed to wearing this garment during his German campaign of A.D. 213.
