Description [Look at THIS!] [Look at THIS!] CARACALLA - Prince of the Youth Denarius ----------------------------------------------------------------- On 10/27/98 at 18:30:54 PDT, seller added the following information: CARACALLA, Caesar 196-198 A.D. -- born Julius Bassianus in 188 A.D., was proclaimed Caesar at the age of 8, then Augustus two years later. This silver Denarius is 16mm (5/8 inch diameter) and shows him at that tender age, as Caesar, before his ambitions led him to murder his own brother (co-Emperor Geta) when he was 24, and Geta was 21. Caracalla met a similar fate himself only five years later. Caracalla is shown on the reverse as Prince of the Youth (PRINCIPI IVVENTIVS) carrying a spear, and standing beside a trophy of captured enemy arms. Like many Roman coins, the reverse die evidently had more wear than the obverse. Coins of Caracalla as Caesar are scarcer than those made for the longer period he was Augustus. This coin is the type of Sear #1893, valued in 1988 at 55 pounds ($88.00 U.S.) if in good Very Fine. ----------------------------------------------------------------- On 10/27/98 at 18:31:38 PDT, seller added the following information: CLICK HERE to check out my other nice coins that someone else will get - unless you bid on them. Bidders please note: All my coins are photographed, in black and white, to show details better. I use Snappy! to process the image, and crop the picture, but do NOTHING to alter the image. What you see is what you will receive from me. If you pay by bank check or money order, I'll send your coin(s) as soon as I receive payment. If you pay by personal check, I may hold the coin until the funds clear (usually a week). Please do NOT send cash, for your own protection. I'll add $2.00 (sometimes $3.00 for valuable shipments, or more for addresses outside the U.S.). This covers my packaging, shipping (via U.S. Mail), and insurance costs. All coins guaranteed genuine and as described, of course. Sincerely, Henri J. Delger, former ANA member #44654 (30 years).
