Description This piece was minted in 195 AD, during the reign of Septimius Severus, who ruled from 193-211 AD. Septimius Severus was one of three provincial governors who answered the call of an outraged public to oust the shamefully elected Didius Julianus, who literally had bought the throne in an auction. He was first to arrive in Rome, and easily dispensed with the deserted Julianus, who was beheaded in his palace. He then dealt with the forces of the other two governors, and became master of the Roman world. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with legends L.SEPT.SEV.PERT.AVG.IMP.VII. The reverse type features Victory advancing left, holding wreath and trophy, with legends ARAB.ADIAB.COS.II.P.P. This type was minted to mark Severus' victories over the Arabs and Adiabenians, achieved as part of his campaign against Pescennius Niger in the East. This piece is struck on a typically small Severan period flan, but otherwise grades F+, with devices and legends very clear where struck up. A nice example of this historical type, catalouged as RSC-50. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
